When the Night Calls by Romyra
Part Six
8.30 am: The Winner Residence.
"Duo get away from the stove!"
"Aww man, come on Wufei, I just wanted to make you guys breakfast seeing that we'll be here for a while. Come on, please?"
" Not on your life Maxwell, your cooking could kill the dead." 1
" Darn it, what am I going to do now I don't have to be at West end until 10.30am, come on Wu….there has got to be something I can do."
" You can get out of my kitchen, I have to finish cooking for everyone. Aren't you hungry? Don't you want to eat?"
"Well, yeah, but I want to help."
"NO, Now go away."
Fed up of trying to convince Duo to leave the kitchen, Wufei began to move towards him brandishing a flour covered spatula. Although it's hard to look threatening when you're wearing an apron that says * kiss the cook* on it and plus being covered in flour from trying to get Duo away from the kitchen, Wufei managed to pull it off. 2
" Fine then, I'm going." Muttering darkly to himself about hard-headed dragons, Duo left the kitchen, only to pop a head in and say", Hey Wufei,"
"What?" came the exasperated voice. " Get laid or something would ya, you're as hard up as a statue." 3
The peaceful morning's silence was then broken by screams of laughter and shouts of rage.
Briefly Quatre considered going onto the kitchen to see what the commotion was about but quickly changed his mind when he looked out of the window and saw Wufei chasing a laughing Duo across the lawn. ** Those two never stop.**
" Quatre," came the soft voice", come back to bed."
Returning to the warm embrace of his lover Quatre left Duo to fend for himself, after all Wufei wouldn't really kill Duo just bend him a little and its not as if he didn't deserve it, Duo could really be a pain sometimes.
9.45 am : In Transit
"Heero, what if she suddenly decides not to come? What will I do ? I can't deal with this, please take me home."
" Duo you'll be fine, she will show up because she is as curious as you are to know what happened that made your mother decide to separate the two of you."
"But, what if she has a change of heart ? What if Richard comes with her even though I asked her to come alone? Please won't you stay with me?"
" No , you said it yourself, to come alone. If I go with you she'll think that something is up and she'll leave."
" But,"
" No buts Duo you are going."
" But, Heero I,"
" No, I said you are going and that's that."
" But,"
" DUO!"
" Ahh, gomen Heero but I have to use the bathroom."
Heero briefly considered banging his head against the wheel, but then reconsidered, after all one couldn't blame Duo. A new sister was something to be excited about, but did he have to be so persistent in his not wanting to go, and damn Duo could be loud.
10.25 am West end.
"Okay, I'll be back in an hour or two, you will be alright Duo now go and meet your sister."
"Thank you Heero, I'll be fine now, see you in a bit okay?"
"Yes, now go."
As Duo went into the coffee shop, Heero couldn't shake the feeling that something was going to happen today. It was to soon to say if it was good or bad but it was going to happen.
Duo sat down and ordered a vanilla espresso while he waited for Anita to show up. After a few minutes he saw her making her way to his seat. He stood up to greet her and as she sat and ordered for herself he wondered briefly what he was getting himself into.
" Well, " they both began.
" Umm.. why don't you go first." Said Anita.
" Well, as I said before my name is Duo Maxwell and I was raised in the home of a very distant aunt and I've known about you for only a short while."
" How did you find out about me?"
" I was working with the children of an orphanage when there was suddenly this scream in my head. It was a scream of pain and it went on and on until I thought I would go mad and then it stopped and fear filled me. 4 The children were very frightened and I was given an extended leave to straighten myself out before I came back to work.
Needless to say I hadn't a clue about what was going on until I saw a picture of you in one of the local newspapers. My aunt was very reluctant to speak your name and it took a while before she would even mention the fact that I had asked about you. When she did it was to say that you were my twin sister and that I should never have known about you because the two of us could decide the fate of all." Duo stopped, exhausted.
" But that doesn't explain how you knew that I was the one, that I was your sister."
" I'm not sure how I knew, but when I saw your picture a feeling of rightness came over me and I knew I had to find out more. As the months went on, everytime something happened to you I would feel it,…. Anita.." said Duo in wonder", I could feel your pain and your joy everytime something happened to you. I felt you dismay, your anger and your happiness. I knew when you were sad or in danger and it hurt not being able to help you so I decided to find you. I don't know what my aunt meant but so far all I've felt is good and I'm very glad that I've finally found you."
" Duo I don't know what to say, I mean I've never had someone close to me as my mom and when she died I was lost. I'm not even sure how it must have felt for you to feel all my emotions over the past couple of years."
" Well I had a good teacher in helping me to deal with the strange feelings I was having."
" Let me guess, Heero?"
" Yup, if he hadn’t found me when he did I don't know what I would have done. There was this one time that I felt this rush of pain and then I blacked out in the middle of a highway at rushhour. Heero was the man who dug me out of the wreckage and nursed me back to health when I couldn't fend for myself. 5
" He brought me home with him and I've been with him ever since."
" And I thought that I had it rough, but at least you had someone to take care of you. I mean up until recently ,I felt that I had found the one and then J-C came into the picture."
Anita didn't know what was making her divulge her deepest secrets to Duo but she couldn't deny the growing bond between them and with Duo she felt like her old self again.
"Richard was the first man after a really long time that I felt for and then I fell in love with him and my world changed. He proposed and I accepted and then I saw him change into a werewolf and I couldn't handle it and then Jean-Claude decided that he was in love with me and he wanted to woo me.
After that things really went out of control and then we suddenly ended up being joined to each other through me. I did it to save their lives and I would do it again, but from then its been an up hill battle to deal with both of them and with the power growing inside of me."6
" I know ,I felt it." Said Duo as he chuckled lightly.
" Oh yeah, you did didn't you." Anita laughed and realised that she felt better than she had in days. The question was , now what?
" Duo, what did you mean when you said that you could help me with the marks?"
" Well ,Heero taught me how to control the feelings I was getting from you and I was able to get a grip on everything. It was then that I realised that I had a power of my own and being linked to you only served to heighten it and Heero taught me how to control that also. Through him I learned control that Jean-Claude didn't teach you and I also learned how to manipulate my power to its full potential.
I can do the same for you. I can teach you control and how to manipulate the growing power inside of you, maybe even help to further extend your control over the munin."
"What is Heero? A vargamor7 or something?"
" Or something." Said Duo with an impish grin". I'm not at liberty to discuss him behind his back, he really hates that."
" Oh, well then that's fair I suppose, but could I ask him?"
" Sure, I don't know if he would tell but you could ask."
" He wouldn't tell me a darn thing, would he?"
" Nope."
" Why you little imp you knew that all along and yet you let me ask."
" Well we're making conversation aren't we ?,that's what brothers are here for,……aggravation."
Anita developed a small twitch in the corner of her mouth that looked suspiciously like a smile and when Duo saw that he began to make the most ridiculous faces at Anita. Anita maintained her straight face until she gave in to the silly feeling and began to do the same to Duo. After a while they both couldn't help themselves and they both began to laugh heartily, surprising the other customers who threw more than one appraising glance in the direction of the twins.
**Duo, you are a joy.**

Notes:
(1) I've read in at least 3 fics that Duo's cooking can kill or at least seriously poison someone. Whoever thought of the original idea for this, it was really good and I'm just borrowing it.
(2) Wufei could do it of course he could after all its Wufei!!!
(3) Statue, ummmm, hmmmmm, okay I couldn't think of the real ending of the joke I heard so I improvised. If there is anyone who could also be a statue aside from Heero and Trowa it would be Wufei!!!
(4) I'm referring to book one when Nikolaos mind-raped Anita's . Anita got her own back though and how.
(5) This is in book three when Alejandro was killed by Anita, who, because she was currently linked to him at the time went into a coma, for all of Three days.
(6) In book six , Anita, Richard and Jean-Claude were a triumvirate but they only became bound together as Anita agreed in order to save all of their lives. She could live without one or the other but not without both.
(7) This is the Witch of the Lukoi . In book eight Marianne is the witch who tries to help Anita with the marks.

Part Seven
11.30 am West end
"Duo, what exactly is your power?"
" Well if I tell you, do you promise not to freak out or anything, I mean I know that you've seen and heard some pretty wild things but not like what I'm about to tell you."
" Well you've got me, now spill. What is it?"
" Ummm, Well you can raise the dead and since I'm your twin I can do that also only not the same way."
" What do you mean?"
" *sigh* Anita, I'm a resurrector, I can bring the dead back to life and not just like a zombie but back to life, real life."
This stopped Anita, never in all her wildest dreams would she have thought that Duo would be a resurrector. Such a person wasn't supposed to exist and even though those who did voodoo could do resurrection it wasn't the same as a true resurrector. This was to say the least, a shock and Anita was speechless.
" Umm….. Anita?, Anita??, Anita can you hear me? Damn it!, I knew I shouldn't have said anything."
" No… wait, I'm okay, you just stunned me for a second there, So you're a….., you're a….."
" A Resurrector?, yes I am."
" Okay, I can deal with that. I guess that answers my next question as to why we were split up at birth."
" Yup, mom knew that we were different and I suppose that she had an inkling of how much different, I mean can you imagine what would have happened if someone was able to catch the two of us and harness our powers for their own gain?"
" They could use us, they could be killed and they would come back, they would use our powers to control….. anything!"
" Exactly, so it was thought best that we be separated until we were needed I suppose, for what ever great purpose we were put here for."
" Well that certainly puts a new spin on things, I am definitely not telling Jean-Claude about this. I can just see what he would do, he would be overjoyed at having not only a necromancer but a resurrector on his hands."
" I guess that's best, I mean the two of us are a very powerful weapon should anyone decide to try and harness our powers. It’s a good thing that we are protected, I mean you have Richard and Jean-Claude and I have Heero, Quatre, Trowa and Wufei."
" You certainly have a lot of protection."
" Well I have a knack for getting into trouble, not very serious trouble but just enough to be a nuisance."
" Tell me about your friends, I would really like to know more about them."
" Well…, okay I guess I'll start with Quatre, he's the owner of a small shipping company and he is one of Heero's closest friends, I met him while Heero was trying to help me with my link to you. I guess I could be a bit of a pain because Heero's help often lead to a fight while I tried to provoke him into leaving me alone, I mean I really got angry with him, he was so demanding , he always wanted results and when I was exhausted he would be on my case again."
" Sounds as if you really had it rough."
" Yeah, well it did help eventually, but in the mean time I was a pain in the butt. The only problem was that I couldn't be left alone, every so often something would happen and I'd find myself in the weirdest places and with the strangest people and I couldn't remember how I got there. When Heero had to leave, he left me with Quatre and Trowa who took care of me. Trowa is Quatre's lover and their relationship is any thing but normal, I mean Trowa is this very serious guy and Q is this outgoing fella and they were so different and yet they made it work between them and they are very much in love. In fact their love scares me sometimes, they can get really intense but in a good way."
" You really care for them don't you?, I guess in that respect we are very much alike. I would do anything for my friends and I think I'm right when I say that you would to."
" Darn right, these guys are my family and I love them all dearly, in fact it was Q that helped me to face Heero and tell him my true feelings for him. I was so scared, but I was stunned to realize that he cared for me as deeply as I cared for him. Since then no one has been able to separate us. Wufei on the other hand is an enigma to me, he is passionate about the things that he believes in and he doesn't tolerate those who use others for their own selfish means. He has this whole justice thing going and woe to anyone who messes with his friends. I think the two of you are alike, You both don't take any crap from anyone and you can give as good as you get."
Anita couldn't help but admire to way Duo was about his friends, she had always been a good judge of character and seeing Duo talk about his friends really made her miss her own. Jason was one of those friends, they had both been up to their necks in crap but they were great friends and Jason was someone you could count on, even if he was a flirt.
Anita could tell that Duo loved Heero, any small mention of his name made his eyes light up and brought a tiny blush on his cheeks. He actually blushed everytime she mentioned his name. Love what a wonderful thing.
" Anita….earth to Anita.., hey are you there?, I've been talking to myself for at least five minutes while you were off in lala land. Had a good night last night did you?"
Duo grinned unabashedly, and Anita grinned right back and said", No, but judging from the light in your eyes I can see that you did."
Duo then blushed bright red, while Anita laughed. He looked up at her under long lashes and grinned to himself, Anita was great fun and he wondered if she knew any good people to set Wufei up with. While he had been talking she had been thinking and hadn't shielded her thoughts and he had caught a glimpse of blond hair and laughing blue eyes just the type of person he was looking for.
" Duo, when did you realize that you had this power?"
" Hmmmm, Oh, well one day I was walking along the road and I came to this park where all of these little children were playing and I joined in. One little girl had this dog, a German Shepherd and she was playing with a frisbee while the dog ran for it every so often, then the girl ran after it and straight into the path of an oncoming truck. The dog rushed over and got the girl out of the way but he wasn't so lucky and he was dragged under and crushed. The little girl's screams tore at my heart and I remember thinking that it wasn't fair and I ran over and held the girl in my arms and focused her love for her dog to bring it back and it worked. I don't know how, but it worked and the dog came back to life and came up to the girl and licked her face and then her mother came up and they left. I was lucky that no one got a good look at what happened, I didn't know how I would explain what I had done and I really wasn't up to the task of running from a mob."
" Wow, that's amazing, I mean you just focused and it worked? There wasn't any ceremony or anything? I mean I need blood to call the dead and to put them back."
" Well the girl was covered in blood from scratches and I guess some of the dog's blood was mixed in there to, so I did use blood to call the dog back. Heero and the guys found me walking aimlessly a couple hours later and by then I was incoherent. I think it was shock and I pretty much blocked out what had happened and forgot about it. But it didn't let me forget and a few times it happened again. That was when Heero and the others came in, a few times people thought I was a witch and tried to lynch me even though there are laws against that. With the guys at my back they soon forgot that idea and then we came here and I felt your presence so I came to you. I guess it was fate."
" It just may that, I'm not one to believe in fate, but recently a lot of things that I thought impossible have occurred and now I have a whole new outlook on things. By the way,how come we are telepathic?"
"I don't really know, I just know that we are and its part of our being perfect complements to each other, you know death and life.That sort of thing, I guess we can use it to communicate when we are apart.
There was a slight pause in the conversation as they both tried to digest all the things they had both learned. Anita was puzzled, after all if Quatre was the owner of a shipping company then what was he doing with Duo and Heero? Where did Wufei fit into all this and how come they were all travelling together?, were they all part of a group?, if so then what other powers did Duo's friends have if any at all? She didn't think that they were dangerous but it never hurt to check and make sure.
Right then there was a loud beep that startled the twins, who jumped and let out identical yelps of shock. Embarrassed, Anita checked her pager.
" Damn, its Dolph. Duo ,I've got to go. I have a murder scene to check out."
" Can I come with you?, maybe I can help."
" I don't think so, you are a civilian and the police are still up in arms over my being allowed to come to their murder scenes."
But one look from those eyes and Anita was lost, after all, wasn't it in her jurisdiction to bring related persons to the scene of the crime?, and she really didn't want Duo out of her sight.1
**Damn it I've known him only a couple of hours and already I'm protective, way to go Anita.**
There was a moment of waiting while Duo left a message with the nice waitress for Heero when he came for him and then they were off to see what was up at the murder scene. Duo couldn't help but wonder what would be waiting for them at the scene after all it really was only a few months since he had gotten control over his power and he really didn't need to scare police officers, especially those with guns.

Notes:
(1) Related meaning- Anita =Necromancer, Duo= Resurrector. He could be her focus while she felt along the crime scenes. Side note- I just thought that I would change the normal outlook, I mean in nearly all the fics I've ever read, Duo is Death because his Gundam is Shinigami and he wears black and its because of his past,but this is my universe so I hope you can deal with it.

Part Eight
** Okay, I really didn't need to see this but hey it could be worse I could have worn white. It really makes me look fat **
Duo knew that he was talking to himself but what he was seeing was really terrible. Someone or something had ripped a guy to shreds and the unfortunate guy had the misfortune to look just like Wufei, with a few small differences, other than that the guy looked like Wufei and that was freaking him out. It had taken a bit of sweet talking to get him inside the crime scene but once Anita turned on the charm it worked and it seemed to work to well because the police officers were being almost too friendly. He really hoped that they didn't think he was a woman because he just wasn't in the mood to explain anything to anyone.
" So, what have we got Dolph?
" Anita, we have a problem, why did you bring that young woman here? I don't have enough problems without you bringing other civilians on my case?
" That isn't a woman, it's a man and he's my brother and I think that he can help me to find out what is going on."
With that little tidbit of information she walked over to Duo who was still looking at the body or rather what was left of it. After all it wasn't everyday she could shock Dolph. The scene was bad, number four so far and still no leads. Each body had been done in different locations and then strategically placed all over the city. The victims were all male and of Chinese descent, they all also had particular characteristics, black eyes and long black hair at least those who still had faces and heads to match.
This last one was missing the hair but judging from previous experience Anita could infer that it was black. Her suspicions were proven right when the sound of retching brought her to her senses, the hair had been found. It had been strewn around the body like petals at a wedding and that little fact was very disturbing.
" Duo are you alright? you've been very quiet, not that you talk a lot but so far I've never seen you so still and it troubles me."
" I've just never seen such carnage, I mean this is death at its fullest and whoever did this meant business, but its more than that it seems as though it's a ritual."
" What do you mean ritual? I haven't been able to find a definite pattern anywhere that would suggest something like that."
" I just recall hearing something about this method of killing before, it's a ritual I'm sure of it. How many have there been so far?"
" There have been four murders and they were all of Chinese descent and," " And they had black hair and eyes?"
" Yes how did you know that?"
" I think I have the answer that you're looking for but you have to promise me that you won't say anything to the police as yet, please……. promise me."
" Alright, I promise but I really don't like this."
" Okay meet me at this address at 9.30 tonight and I'll try to explain and come alone okay."
" Alright but this had better be good."
With that last cryptic statement Duo hugged Anita and began to make his way home.

In the shadows somewhere, there was a pain-filled scream and another and another until the voice began to get strained and still the screaming went on. There was a chilling laugh and then silence. The sounds of a harsh sobbing could be heard against a background of cold empty laughter. " I'm almossssssst done Wufei, just one more and the ritual will be complete and then the real fun will begin. Wait for me I'm coming."

At the Winner Residence
" Where have you been?"
" Chill out Heero, I've been with Anita, Geez you'd think I was on a leash or something."
" I'm sorry Duo, it's just that I've had a really weird feeling whole day and then you go off somewhere and don't come home for hours….."
" Shh Heero, it's alright I'm fine, although its nice to know you care." Heero failed to notice the grin curving Duo's lips and he heard only the words spoken and not the laughter behind it.
" Nice to know I care??, Duo, you ass, I Love You…. of course I care."
At this Duo's grin grew wider and he leaned against his lover, that same small smile gracing his face.
" I know that, I just really like it when you get all hot and bothered when you say those words ," Duo kissed him", with such feeling", another kiss", and such passion."
This last statement was punctuated with a long smoldering kiss that left Heero breathless.
Quatre chose that moment to walk into the room. For a moment he could only watch in stunned amazement as Duo slowly French-kissed Heero, a kiss that left no doubt as to what Duo was planning for later.
" Ahem……guys?"
There was no answer and, although he really didn't expect one Quatre tried again.
" Guys??, Heeellloooo Guys??, Umm ….well…. dinner is almost ready and… err…. I just…. wanted to know if you'd be joining us?"
***Dinner……Oh crap!, Anita!***
Duo broke away from the kiss with a force that left Heero gasping", Oh, gomen Heero, he turned to face Quatre", Quatre, I just remembered that I invited Anita to dinner. I have some information that I think you guys should hear about, is it alright?, for her to come to dinner I mean."
" Ye..Yes, its all right, I'll just tell Rashid to set another place on the table and Duo, next time, I suggest that you warn Heero before you invite someone into our home." Quatre then left the room to finalize dinner arrangements.
Duo turned around to find Heero glaring at him", Dinner? You invited her for dinner?"
" Yes I did. Why?, is there a problem?" Duo began to get angry, after all it was his home too and Anita was his sister, Heero would have to deal with that sooner or later and the sooner the better. Heero's shoulders slumped and he lifted his hands in a placating gesture.
" Duo, I'm sorry if you misunderstood me, I just wished you had given me more time to prepare, after all its your sister and I really want to make a good impression."
The effect of an apologizing Heero was ruined by the purely shit-eating grin he was giving Duo.
" Why you no good bastard, you were setting me up weren't you? You knew I would react this way and you wanted to make me angry."
" Well it worked didn't it?" Heero gave a small sigh", I guess I'll have to make it up to you, won't I?" Heero sighed dramatically and pretended to shudder at the thought.
" Oh yes, you'd better, in fact didn't Quatre say that dinner would be….. all…most ready?"
" Yes, but what does that have to do with anything?…….oh."
The grin Duo turned on Heero was answer enough and as Quatre came back into the room to find out when Anita would be arriving and to give another time-check for the meal, he saw Duo leading Heero up the stairs with what could only be described as a expression of animalistic glee.
***Those two never quit… I'd better tell Rashid to make sure dinner is a little late.***
Quatre grinned to himself and went off to make more arrangements.

Part Nine
Anita was a little apprehensive about meeting Duo's family, after all she wanted to make a good impression and she didn't want anything to interfere with that. Richard had not been pleased when she had said that she was going out and he couldn't follow her and neither had Jean-Claude for that matter. They both were too protective, she was only going to see her brother and even though she didn't tell them that, they had no right to question her whereabouts. So here she was, outside one of the largest mansions she had ever seen and in the most isolated part of the city. To say this was strange would not even come close and she was still apprehensive, not to mention she wasn't sure how she would be received, would they be as wary of her as she was of them?, would they hate her on sight?, or would they be indifferent and simply not care?
Anita really didn't like any of those options.
**Huh….well I'd better get this over with**
**You worry too much Anita, has anyone ever told you that hmmmm….everyone here is as anxious to meet you as you are to meet them, and they are all as apprehensive as you, except maybe Heero other than that……well why don't you come and see?**
** Damnit, I really need to shield my thoughts better and Duo,**
**Hmmm?**
***STOP reading me!!***
The only answer she got was a mental chuckle as she knocked on the door, it was time to face the music.
The door opened to one of the most beautiful faces she had ever seen, Blond and blue-eyed the young man was simply stunning and as Anita made her way into the foyer she was struck by the beauty of all those assembled. **Damn, are Duo's friends all gorgeous?**
***Yup and you better get used to it as we'll all be together for a long time***
Anita couldn't help the silly grin that passed over her lips at that thought.
"Hello Anita, I am Quatre, this is my partner Trowa, this is Wufei and I believe you've met Heero."
" Good night everyone, thank you for having me."
" There's no need to be so formal here Anita, we are all family and as Duo's sister you are very welcome."
" ….And if you're not then we'll all just have to go out and get you rip roaring drunk until you are."
At Duo's frank statement everyone laughed and the ice was broken. As Anita made her way into the dining room her eyes fell on the one called Wufei, there was something very familiar about him and even though she couldn't figure it out now, she would before the night was over. Before she took another step her arm was caught and a soft but strong voice said, "Thank you for making him happy, your acceptance of him is more precious than anything in this world." The speaker was Heero and Anita smiled.
" He is my brother and I find myself falling very quickly in love with him but never forget Heero, you have first place in his heart now and forever. I've only been with him for one day but he is very much in love with you never doubt that."
Heero nodded once to show his thanks before Duo's insistent voice called to them from the dining room.
"Are you guys ever coming to eat, geez… you'd think that we had all the time in the world, well I've got news for you people we don't, and I'm hungry NOW!"
Anita laughed", Heero I think that we'd better get in there before he starts to gnaw on the furniture."
" He wouldn't dare, Quatre would kill him ,that furniture is imported and very dear to him."
At Heero's deadpan statement Anita started to laugh again and they made their way into the dining room to the tune of Duo's protests as to why he shouldn't get the whole chicken.
Dinner was very pleasant and Anita enjoyed herself immensely, it had been a long time since she last had such great company. During dinner Duo had kept them all in stitches with a series of really silly jokes, but when delivered with his incurable good humor they were all laughed at. Anita was completely at ease with all five men and they in turn were very comfortable with her in their presence. They even went as far as to share embraces with their loved ones when they saw that she didn't mind. The only one who had no one to share with was Wufei, although he kept up in remarkably good spirits. This gave Anita a good opportunity to speak to him as she saw him looking out over the garden.
" Hello Wufei.."
" Hello Anita, are you having a good time?"
" Yes, everyone is wonderful and Duo seems so very happy."
" Yes, its because of Heero that he's like that, before they came together they had the worst fights and we always had to pick up the pieces afterwards."
" Duo told me, I am very glad that he had friends like you to keep him safe."
Somehow Wufei wasn't surprised that Duo had confided most of his secrets to Anita, she seemed like a very understanding person and he was grateful to all the Gods above for that.
" Has Duo said anything about us?, the rest of his family I mean."
" Only that you took care of him when Heero had to leave. Can you tell me where he went?"
" I could but I think that you should ask him, if he trusts you he will tell you, but I cannot speak of it without his permission."
" Alright, I will speak to him, in fact I need to speak to all of you before this night is over as it will be very soon."
They made their way into the living room where the others had gathered after dinner.
" Hey Anita, for a moment I thought that you and Wufei had gone off together for your own little party."
Duo couldn't help but poke fun at Wufei, after all he really looked quite cute when he turned red and started to get worked up. Tonight Duo was slightly surprised when Wufei only raised one eyebrow and quirked his lips in answer. However there was time to deal with that later he mused, as he turned to face those gathered around him and to inform them of the reason he had invited Anita to dinner.
" Today I met Anita for a chance to talk to her and to tell her of me and of my power. She was stunned but she didn't reject me and we have both grown closer. While we were talking there was a call for her to report to the scene of a crime, I went with her to see if I could help and what I saw shocked me. It was the fourth murder in a series of strange incidents involving young men of Chinese descent. " Wufei sat straight up when he heard this.
"I learned that they were all killed in various ways and each one was I little more disturbing than the last but what really shocked me was the fact that I seemed to remember hearing of this mode of killing. That's why I brought Anita here, one of us knows what I am speaking about and as Anita's brother I wish to do all that I can to help her solve what is going on."
As Duo finished talking, Wufei seemed to reach a decision and he turned to face those assembled.
" I know what Duo is talking about, I was the one who mentioned the details of this type of killing to him, in fact to all of you. It is a ritual, a ritual for calling a mate, but not any mate and not just of any race either. It is the ritual for calling the mate of the last female dragon in existence."
At this Anita sat up", A dragon?, but there are no dragons left in existence, they were all destroyed by those seeking to harness their powers for their own greed and for their fortune."
" That is true, there are no female dragons left in existence which is why this type of ritualistic killing is very strange but there is one male dragon left in existence only he has been in hiding for the last few centuries."
Quatre sat up," Wufei are you sure about this, when you say it there is no going back and I just want to make sure that you know what you are doing."
" I'm sure Quatre and I have to do this, It sickens me that someone could be carrying out this ritual without fully understanding the meaning behind it. Anita this maybe a little bit of a shock for you but there is one last male dragon and I know his whereabouts because you see,.. I am he. I am the last Dragon."
" I am Wufei Chang. The last of the Dragon Clan."
For the second time in as many days, Anita was shocked.

" But that's impossible, you feel human, you don't feel as though you have any special powers, you feel just like a normal human being."
" That's the secret, unlike the dragons that were my ancestors, there were a few of us that could assume human guise. We had no desire to take over the humankind but we were curious and as a result we were careless and my people paid for their curiosity. When they were found out they were hunted down and killed, an entire race of beings, destroyed because they could not be understood.
My wife and my first life-mate were of the first ones to be killed. In her fear and distress she lost the child she was carrying and could not assume her dragon form and so she could not get to safety. My life-mate tried to help her but he was outnumbered by those with hate in their heart and blood on their minds. I lost her and him as I lost everyone else. I am the last and I am all alone.
When the law was passed to protect mythological creatures from unlawful persecution I was angry, angry that it was too late and angry that I could do nothing to save my people.
When the call came for all creatures to reveal themselves and be accepted I refused and instead I took my human guise and pretended to be mortal. I had no wish to reveal myself and I have done so only once before, the second time is with you."
Exhausted both emotionally and physically, Wufei could only sit down on the seat provided by Quatre who quickly enfolded him in his arms and brushed a soft kiss of understanding across his brow. It had been too much for Wufei and he gratefully turned into the embrace offered to him as he sobbed silently. Anita could only sit in stunned amazement as Heero and Duo made their way over to the chair to offer what comfort that they could.
In a dim part of her memory Anita took stock of the fact that they seemed to give comfort as the Lycanthropes did, through the reassurance of touch and bodily contact. She was horrified by what had just been revealed to her and her heart went out to Wufei, this was the same type of thing that she was fighting against, wrongful persecution of other races.
Her fight to protect zombies was only a small part of what the greater fight being fought was about and Anita was enraged at what had happened to the young man before her. She was shaken out of her thoughts by the quiet voice of Trowa.
" Wufei has seen it fit to reveal who and what he really is to you and that means that he has accepted you and as his friends we must do the same. My name is Trowa but for a long time I had no name, I was just another guardian of the mortals in my charge. I am an angel and there is not much to be said about me other than the fact my charge was no other than the young man sitting before you, Quatre R. Winner, who was the latest in a long line of charges that were entrusted to my care and from the moment I saw him I knew my life could never be the same. He was different and I quickly picked up on that and as I watched him from afar I fell in love and wanted no more than to be with him forever.
I decided to fall to earth knowing fully that I would lose my divinity and become mortal but I had to try, and so one night of the full moon I fell. I timed my fall to the place I knew my beloved would be and hoped that he would understand what I had done for him. I crashed down to the garden and frightened him badly, I was covered in blood and I thought that he would run and leave me but he didn't, instead he said he knew that I would come and he would be the one to save me. He took me in his arm and carried me home, I have been with him ever since."
An angel, things were getting doubly interesting and Anita did not know if she could keep up with all the revelations being made but she knew that she would never have another chance and decided to hold her peace and listen for the while. As Trowa spoke Quatre listened and decided to add his small part to the puzzle being unfolded out before them.
"My name is Quatre R.Winner I have no other ties to fame other than the fact that I can heal people through the power of my touch. I can heal those of emotional hurts and those of physical hurts. I keep this power to myself because I can never truly heal those who wish to do harm unto others for their own ends. I knew Trowa would come to me because I felt his presence at the moment of my birth and I knew that one day we would be together. He did not say this, but he was granted special status to remain my guardian when it was seen that we were meant to be together. He has all the powers that he once had and is my protector and I love him with all my heart and soul."
Quatre smiled over to Trowa who watched him with a smile also present on his face, their love could be felt in the air and Anita trembled in reaction to the feelings around her. All eyes then switched to Heero, it was time for his story.
" My name is Heero Yuy and I am also the last of my clan, like Wufei, my race was killed by those who preferred to act rather than to take the time to understand those of different backgrounds. I am a Trueborn, we were the original ancestors of the present day lycanthropes. We were faster, more powerful, we possessed longevity and could harness the power of nature. My race was discovered by those who wanted quick ways to garner power, and the reactions to their controlling nature was not pleasant. There was a bloodbath but our numbers were small and we were quickly destroyed, I alone remained of the Trueborns. There were however children who managed to escape and they mated with those of other clans and became the forefathers of the present day lycanthropes. Of those who had the powers I mentioned I am the last and so effectively the last Trueborn."
" To end our tale I found Wufei and became his friend, we were alike in our situations, we both passed as full blood humans and no-one was the wiser. We have no illusions to rule, we just want to be left in peace. We never became lovers and we spent our lives with each other for the last 4 centuries. Wufei is the elder by 2 centuries. In our wanderings we chanced upon the unique couple of an angel and a mortal, Trowa and Quatre, Wufei and I were quickly accepted and as the time went on he became their lover and I found Duo soon after that. I leave sometimes to pay my respects to those I have lost, that is something that Duo taught me." Heero looked over to Duo who gave him a smile and a wink and continued."We have all lived as one family with Quatre providing us with a home and that is all there is. You know the rest from what Duo has told you and so what do you think?"
" I am honored that you, all of you would share your tales with me. I wish only to be counted among your friends and I am sincerely sorry for all that you have endured at the hands of those who did not understand you."
" You already are Anita, from the moment you accepted Duo you became a member of our family and as such you are entitled to our protection should you ever need it." This soft statement was made by Quatre, who held the now calmed Wufei in his arms. They all nodded once in acceptance of what Quatre said and Duo grinned happily at those around him, his circle was complete and there was nothing that could ever take away what he held in his arms now.
12.30am The Winner Living Room.
***Everyone here is so very strange and exotic, who would ever have thought that in this day there would still be an authentic dragon? Not to mention that the lycanthropes of today are not the first born they believe they are, but a mixture of many other clans? And the most to say the least is the revelation that there is a real live angel here in this very room.***
Anita was in a very mild state of shock and the fact that she didn't drink meant that all her thinking processes were at full capacity and she was lucid, so that everything heard was being processed and stored for future reference. It certainly was turning out to be an interesting night.
" You said that there have been 4 murders, I do know that there are 5 stages to the ritual so one person remains to be killed. It was a very old ritual and whomever is perpetuating these murders certainly must have an idea of the history of the ancient dragons."
" But Wufei why on earth would this person do this now?"
" Duo, this year is a leap year and as a result all the planets are in perfect alignment for the mating ritual and the conceiving of offspring."
" But no-one knows of your existence, as far as anyone is concerned there are no more dragons."
" Obviously someone is hoping that this ritual will bring out one, but Wufei why haven't you been affected?"
" Well Heero I've been living as a human for quite a number of years and maybe that's why it hasn't affected me as yet."
" Wufei, if the final murder is carried out what will happen to you?"
" Quatre I really don't know, I never had to go through this type of ritual before, my mates were chosen by my parents and so I have never had to experience this before. The ritual is used for those who cannot for some reason chose a proper mate, the ritual causes any available male to go on heat and they will therefore be ready for mating. However if the dragon chosen does not want to be mated he will fight the call and it usually leads to a large amount of deaths as the other dragons try to get that particular dragon under control."
" Will this happen to you, do you have any idea if you can be affected after all we have been your mates for a long while now."
" Trowa you and Quatre are mated and although I may make love to you on occasion, I am not mated in the commitment that normal mating entails. Dragons like many creatures mate for life and only through death are we released from that which bonds us. I should have died with my mates but after her death he begged me to live, he didn't want my life to end like theirs' did. Draakel felt that I was meant for something else and for that reason alone I stayed alive."
" Wufei I am glad that you chose life, we are honored that you chose to share yourself with us and we will do everything possible to protect you and keep you from what or whomever is doing this."
" Thank you Quatre I don't know what I would do without friends like you."
During the talk that they had been having, Duo was thinking of a suitable guardian for Wufei, it had to be someone whom they could trust and he had to be able to withstand Wufei's fury. Duo knew of just the person but he couldn't say for sure he had to ask everyone first.
" Guys, I know that Wufei is quite capable of taking care of himself but in case one of us can't be with him at some time can we have someone here to watch him for us?"
" Duo that really isn't necessary I am fine, and noth…"
" We don't know that as yet, you haven't been affected with us present but what if something happens while we are away and you go on a rampage? What then?, I'd really feel better if I knew that you were doubly protected."
At this a peculiar light went off in Duo's eyes, a light that was not missed by Heero, Quatre, Trowa or Anita only Wufei seemed oblivious.
" I know just the person too, he's someone that Anita trusts with her life, and she doesn't give that trust easily and I'm sure with a little persuasion he can be brought here to take care of things while we go to work."
" Who are you talking about Duo?"
" Why Anita, no-one else than your friend Jason."
" Jason?…Why him?"
" He is one of your best friends isn't he? You would both give your lives to protect the other wouldn't you?"
" Yes….but I don't see…"
" Good then its settled then, Jason is the bodyguard for Wufei while the rest of us are at work."
" But Duo you forget that I have to work also, I can't just stay home and do nothing…."
" That's alright Wufei, as Manager and owner of the company I am putting you on extended leave starting today."
" But Quatre…"
" No buts Wufei you are to stay at home where this Jason person can keep you safe."
Quatre didn't know what Duo was planning, but it seemed as good as any plan to keep Wufei safe. He would do anything for Wufei, he did love him maybe not in the same way as he loved Trowa but Wufei was not someone whom Quatre would leave in the cold. He would use all of the resources he had to keep Wufei safe.

**Gasp**,okay, okay I'm really sorry that Wufei had to go through so much hell. I'm going to be a lot more nicer now. I bet you didn't expect that little thing between Trowa and Quatre. If anything Quatre would be the angel but that's a whole different story altogether.
I hope you enjoyed this part things are getting hotter from here on in. In case anyone is wondering I did say that only the names and physical descriptions would remain the same but my muse said differently. After all Wufei being the last of the dragon clan is a great plot device and Heero being oh so 'perfect-soldierish' is perfect for Trueborn defiance.
Trowa's intensity is perfect for guardians who are not supposed to get involved with their charges. Quatre's personality is perfect for a healer and well Duo is just Duo.

8.30 am: The Winner Residence.
"Duo get away from the stove!"
"Aww man, come on Wufei, I just wanted to make you guys breakfast seeing that we'll be here for a while. Come on, please?"
" Not on your life Maxwell, your cooking could kill the dead." 1
" Darn it, what am I going to do now I don't have to be at West end until 10.30am, come on Wu….there has got to be something I can do."
" You can get out of my kitchen, I have to finish cooking for everyone. Aren't you hungry? Don't you want to eat?"
"Well, yeah, but I want to help."
"NO, Now go away."
Fed up of trying to convince Duo to leave the kitchen, Wufei began to move towards him brandishing a flour covered spatula. Although it's hard to look threatening when you're wearing an apron that says * kiss the cook* on it and plus being covered in flour from trying to get Duo away from the kitchen, Wufei managed to pull it off. 2
" Fine then, I'm going." Muttering darkly to himself about hard-headed dragons, Duo left the kitchen, only to pop a head in and say", Hey Wufei,"
"What?" came the exasperated voice. " Get laid or something would ya, you're as hard up as a statue." 3
The peaceful morning's silence was then broken by screams of laughter and shouts of rage.
Briefly Quatre considered going onto the kitchen to see what the commotion was about but quickly changed his mind when he looked out of the window and saw Wufei chasing a laughing Duo across the lawn. ** Those two never stop.**
" Quatre," came the soft voice", come back to bed."
Returning to the warm embrace of his lover Quatre left Duo to fend for himself, after all Wufei wouldn't really kill Duo just bend him a little and its not as if he didn't deserve it, Duo could really be a pain sometimes.
9.45 am : In Transit
"Heero, what if she suddenly decides not to come? What will I do ? I can't deal with this, please take me home."
" Duo you'll be fine, she will show up because she is as curious as you are to know what happened that made your mother decide to separate the two of you."
"But, what if she has a change of heart ? What if Richard comes with her even though I asked her to come alone? Please won't you stay with me?"
" No , you said it yourself, to come alone. If I go with you she'll think that something is up and she'll leave."
" But,"
" No buts Duo you are going."
" But, Heero I,"
" No, I said you are going and that's that."
" But,"
" DUO!"
" Ahh, gomen Heero but I have to use the bathroom."
Heero briefly considered banging his head against the wheel, but then reconsidered, after all one couldn't blame Duo. A new sister was something to be excited about, but did he have to be so persistent in his not wanting to go, and damn Duo could be loud.
10.25 am West end.
"Okay, I'll be back in an hour or two, you will be alright Duo now go and meet your sister."
"Thank you Heero, I'll be fine now, see you in a bit okay?"
"Yes, now go."
As Duo went into the coffee shop, Heero couldn't shake the feeling that something was going to happen today. It was to soon to say if it was good or bad but it was going to happen.
Duo sat down and ordered a vanilla espresso while he waited for Anita to show up. After a few minutes he saw her making her way to his seat. He stood up to greet her and as she sat and ordered for herself he wondered briefly what he was getting himself into.
" Well, " they both began.
" Umm.. why don't you go first." Said Anita.
" Well, as I said before my name is Duo Maxwell and I was raised in the home of a very distant aunt and I've known about you for only a short while."
" How did you find out about me?"
" I was working with the children of an orphanage when there was suddenly this scream in my head. It was a scream of pain and it went on and on until I thought I would go mad and then it stopped and fear filled me. 4 The children were very frightened and I was given an extended leave to straighten myself out before I came back to work.
Needless to say I hadn't a clue about what was going on until I saw a picture of you in one of the local newspapers. My aunt was very reluctant to speak your name and it took a while before she would even mention the fact that I had asked about you. When she did it was to say that you were my twin sister and that I should never have known about you because the two of us could decide the fate of all." Duo stopped, exhausted.
" But that doesn't explain how you knew that I was the one, that I was your sister."
" I'm not sure how I knew, but when I saw your picture a feeling of rightness came over me and I knew I had to find out more. As the months went on, everytime something happened to you I would feel it,…. Anita.." said Duo in wonder", I could feel your pain and your joy everytime something happened to you. I felt you dismay, your anger and your happiness. I knew when you were sad or in danger and it hurt not being able to help you so I decided to find you. I don't know what my aunt meant but so far all I've felt is good and I'm very glad that I've finally found you."
" Duo I don't know what to say, I mean I've never had someone close to me as my mom and when she died I was lost. I'm not even sure how it must have felt for you to feel all my emotions over the past couple of years."
" Well I had a good teacher in helping me to deal with the strange feelings I was having."
" Let me guess, Heero?"
" Yup, if he hadn’t found me when he did I don't know what I would have done. There was this one time that I felt this rush of pain and then I blacked out in the middle of a highway at rushhour. Heero was the man who dug me out of the wreckage and nursed me back to health when I couldn't fend for myself. 5
" He brought me home with him and I've been with him ever since."
" And I thought that I had it rough, but at least you had someone to take care of you. I mean up until recently ,I felt that I had found the one and then J-C came into the picture."
Anita didn't know what was making her divulge her deepest secrets to Duo but she couldn't deny the growing bond between them and with Duo she felt like her old self again.
"Richard was the first man after a really long time that I felt for and then I fell in love with him and my world changed. He proposed and I accepted and then I saw him change into a werewolf and I couldn't handle it and then Jean-Claude decided that he was in love with me and he wanted to woo me.
After that things really went out of control and then we suddenly ended up being joined to each other through me. I did it to save their lives and I would do it again, but from then its been an up hill battle to deal with both of them and with the power growing inside of me."6
" I know ,I felt it." Said Duo as he chuckled lightly.
" Oh yeah, you did didn't you." Anita laughed and realised that she felt better than she had in days. The question was , now what?
" Duo, what did you mean when you said that you could help me with the marks?"
" Well ,Heero taught me how to control the feelings I was getting from you and I was able to get a grip on everything. It was then that I realised that I had a power of my own and being linked to you only served to heighten it and Heero taught me how to control that also. Through him I learned control that Jean-Claude didn't teach you and I also learned how to manipulate my power to its full potential.
I can do the same for you. I can teach you control and how to manipulate the growing power inside of you, maybe even help to further extend your control over the munin."
"What is Heero? A vargamor7 or something?"
" Or something." Said Duo with an impish grin". I'm not at liberty to discuss him behind his back, he really hates that."
" Oh, well then that's fair I suppose, but could I ask him?"
" Sure, I don't know if he would tell but you could ask."
" He wouldn't tell me a darn thing, would he?"
" Nope."
" Why you little imp you knew that all along and yet you let me ask."
" Well we're making conversation aren't we ?,that's what brothers are here for,……aggravation."
Anita developed a small twitch in the corner of her mouth that looked suspiciously like a smile and when Duo saw that he began to make the most ridiculous faces at Anita. Anita maintained her straight face until she gave in to the silly feeling and began to do the same to Duo. After a while they both couldn't help themselves and they both began to laugh heartily, surprising the other customers who threw more than one appraising glance in the direction of the twins.
**Duo, you are a joy.**

(1) I've read in at least 3 fics that Duo's cooking can kill or at least seriously poison someone. Whoever thought of the original idea for this, it was really good and I'm just borrowing it.

(3) Statue, ummmm, hmmmmm, okay I couldn't think of the real ending of the joke I heard so I improvised. If there is anyone who could also be a statue aside from Heero and Trowa it would be Wufei!!!

(5) This is in book three when Alejandro was killed by Anita, who, because she was currently linked to him at the time went into a coma, for all of Three days.

"Duo, what exactly is your power?"
" Well if I tell you, do you promise not to freak out or anything, I mean I know that you've seen and heard some pretty wild things but not like what I'm about to tell you."
" Well you've got me, now spill. What is it?"
" Ummm, Well you can raise the dead and since I'm your twin I can do that also only not the same way."
" What do you mean?"
" *sigh* Anita, I'm a resurrector, I can bring the dead back to life and not just like a zombie but back to life, real life."
This stopped Anita, never in all her wildest dreams would she have thought that Duo would be a resurrector. Such a person wasn't supposed to exist and even though those who did voodoo could do resurrection it wasn't the same as a true resurrector. This was to say the least, a shock and Anita was speechless.
" Umm….. Anita?, Anita??, Anita can you hear me? Damn it!, I knew I shouldn't have said anything."
" No… wait, I'm okay, you just stunned me for a second there, So you're a….., you're a….."
" A Resurrector?, yes I am."
" Okay, I can deal with that. I guess that answers my next question as to why we were split up at birth."
" Yup, mom knew that we were different and I suppose that she had an inkling of how much different, I mean can you imagine what would have happened if someone was able to catch the two of us and harness our powers for their own gain?"
" They could use us, they could be killed and they would come back, they would use our powers to control….. anything!"
" Exactly, so it was thought best that we be separated until we were needed I suppose, for what ever great purpose we were put here for."
" Well that certainly puts a new spin on things, I am definitely not telling Jean-Claude about this. I can just see what he would do, he would be overjoyed at having not only a necromancer but a resurrector on his hands."
" I guess that's best, I mean the two of us are a very powerful weapon should anyone decide to try and harness our powers. It’s a good thing that we are protected, I mean you have Richard and Jean-Claude and I have Heero, Quatre, Trowa and Wufei."
" You certainly have a lot of protection."
" Well I have a knack for getting into trouble, not very serious trouble but just enough to be a nuisance."
" Tell me about your friends, I would really like to know more about them."
" Well…, okay I guess I'll start with Quatre, he's the owner of a small shipping company and he is one of Heero's closest friends, I met him while Heero was trying to help me with my link to you. I guess I could be a bit of a pain because Heero's help often lead to a fight while I tried to provoke him into leaving me alone, I mean I really got angry with him, he was so demanding , he always wanted results and when I was exhausted he would be on my case again."
" Sounds as if you really had it rough."
" Yeah, well it did help eventually, but in the mean time I was a pain in the butt. The only problem was that I couldn't be left alone, every so often something would happen and I'd find myself in the weirdest places and with the strangest people and I couldn't remember how I got there. When Heero had to leave, he left me with Quatre and Trowa who took care of me. Trowa is Quatre's lover and their relationship is any thing but normal, I mean Trowa is this very serious guy and Q is this outgoing fella and they were so different and yet they made it work between them and they are very much in love. In fact their love scares me sometimes, they can get really intense but in a good way."
" You really care for them don't you?, I guess in that respect we are very much alike. I would do anything for my friends and I think I'm right when I say that you would to."
" Darn right, these guys are my family and I love them all dearly, in fact it was Q that helped me to face Heero and tell him my true feelings for him. I was so scared, but I was stunned to realize that he cared for me as deeply as I cared for him. Since then no one has been able to separate us. Wufei on the other hand is an enigma to me, he is passionate about the things that he believes in and he doesn't tolerate those who use others for their own selfish means. He has this whole justice thing going and woe to anyone who messes with his friends. I think the two of you are alike, You both don't take any crap from anyone and you can give as good as you get."
Anita couldn't help but admire to way Duo was about his friends, she had always been a good judge of character and seeing Duo talk about his friends really made her miss her own. Jason was one of those friends, they had both been up to their necks in crap but they were great friends and Jason was someone you could count on, even if he was a flirt.
Anita could tell that Duo loved Heero, any small mention of his name made his eyes light up and brought a tiny blush on his cheeks. He actually blushed everytime she mentioned his name. Love what a wonderful thing.
" Anita….earth to Anita.., hey are you there?, I've been talking to myself for at least five minutes while you were off in lala land. Had a good night last night did you?"
Duo grinned unabashedly, and Anita grinned right back and said", No, but judging from the light in your eyes I can see that you did."
Duo then blushed bright red, while Anita laughed. He looked up at her under long lashes and grinned to himself, Anita was great fun and he wondered if she knew any good people to set Wufei up with. While he had been talking she had been thinking and hadn't shielded her thoughts and he had caught a glimpse of blond hair and laughing blue eyes just the type of person he was looking for.
" Duo, when did you realize that you had this power?"
" Hmmmm, Oh, well one day I was walking along the road and I came to this park where all of these little children were playing and I joined in. One little girl had this dog, a German Shepherd and she was playing with a frisbee while the dog ran for it every so often, then the girl ran after it and straight into the path of an oncoming truck. The dog rushed over and got the girl out of the way but he wasn't so lucky and he was dragged under and crushed. The little girl's screams tore at my heart and I remember thinking that it wasn't fair and I ran over and held the girl in my arms and focused her love for her dog to bring it back and it worked. I don't know how, but it worked and the dog came back to life and came up to the girl and licked her face and then her mother came up and they left. I was lucky that no one got a good look at what happened, I didn't know how I would explain what I had done and I really wasn't up to the task of running from a mob."
" Wow, that's amazing, I mean you just focused and it worked? There wasn't any ceremony or anything? I mean I need blood to call the dead and to put them back."
" Well the girl was covered in blood from scratches and I guess some of the dog's blood was mixed in there to, so I did use blood to call the dog back. Heero and the guys found me walking aimlessly a couple hours later and by then I was incoherent. I think it was shock and I pretty much blocked out what had happened and forgot about it. But it didn't let me forget and a few times it happened again. That was when Heero and the others came in, a few times people thought I was a witch and tried to lynch me even though there are laws against that. With the guys at my back they soon forgot that idea and then we came here and I felt your presence so I came to you. I guess it was fate."
" It just may that, I'm not one to believe in fate, but recently a lot of things that I thought impossible have occurred and now I have a whole new outlook on things. By the way,how come we are telepathic?"
"I don't really know, I just know that we are and its part of our being perfect complements to each other, you know death and life.That sort of thing, I guess we can use it to communicate when we are apart.
There was a slight pause in the conversation as they both tried to digest all the things they had both learned. Anita was puzzled, after all if Quatre was the owner of a shipping company then what was he doing with Duo and Heero? Where did Wufei fit into all this and how come they were all travelling together?, were they all part of a group?, if so then what other powers did Duo's friends have if any at all? She didn't think that they were dangerous but it never hurt to check and make sure.
Right then there was a loud beep that startled the twins, who jumped and let out identical yelps of shock. Embarrassed, Anita checked her pager.
" Damn, its Dolph. Duo ,I've got to go. I have a murder scene to check out."
" Can I come with you?, maybe I can help."
" I don't think so, you are a civilian and the police are still up in arms over my being allowed to come to their murder scenes."
But one look from those eyes and Anita was lost, after all, wasn't it in her jurisdiction to bring related persons to the scene of the crime?, and she really didn't want Duo out of her sight.1
**Damn it I've known him only a couple of hours and already I'm protective, way to go Anita.**
There was a moment of waiting while Duo left a message with the nice waitress for Heero when he came for him and then they were off to see what was up at the murder scene. Duo couldn't help but wonder what would be waiting for them at the scene after all it really was only a few months since he had gotten control over his power and he really didn't need to scare police officers, especially those with guns.

Part Eight
** Okay, I really didn't need to see this but hey it could be worse I could have worn white. It really makes me look fat **
Duo knew that he was talking to himself but what he was seeing was really terrible. Someone or something had ripped a guy to shreds and the unfortunate guy had the misfortune to look just like Wufei, with a few small differences, other than that the guy looked like Wufei and that was freaking him out. It had taken a bit of sweet talking to get him inside the crime scene but once Anita turned on the charm it worked and it seemed to work to well because the police officers were being almost too friendly. He really hoped that they didn't think he was a woman because he just wasn't in the mood to explain anything to anyone.
" So, what have we got Dolph?
" Anita, we have a problem, why did you bring that young woman here? I don't have enough problems without you bringing other civilians on my case?
" That isn't a woman, it's a man and he's my brother and I think that he can help me to find out what is going on."
With that little tidbit of information she walked over to Duo who was still looking at the body or rather what was left of it. After all it wasn't everyday she could shock Dolph. The scene was bad, number four so far and still no leads. Each body had been done in different locations and then strategically placed all over the city. The victims were all male and of Chinese descent, they all also had particular characteristics, black eyes and long black hair at least those who still had faces and heads to match.
This last one was missing the hair but judging from previous experience Anita could infer that it was black. Her suspicions were proven right when the sound of retching brought her to her senses, the hair had been found. It had been strewn around the body like petals at a wedding and that little fact was very disturbing.
" Duo are you alright? you've been very quiet, not that you talk a lot but so far I've never seen you so still and it troubles me."
" I've just never seen such carnage, I mean this is death at its fullest and whoever did this meant business, but its more than that it seems as though it's a ritual."
" What do you mean ritual? I haven't been able to find a definite pattern anywhere that would suggest something like that."
" I just recall hearing something about this method of killing before, it's a ritual I'm sure of it. How many have there been so far?"
" There have been four murders and they were all of Chinese descent and," " And they had black hair and eyes?"
" Yes how did you know that?"
" I think I have the answer that you're looking for but you have to promise me that you won't say anything to the police as yet, please……. promise me."
" Alright, I promise but I really don't like this."
" Okay meet me at this address at 9.30 tonight and I'll try to explain and come alone okay."
" Alright but this had better be good."
With that last cryptic statement Duo hugged Anita and began to make his way home.

In the shadows somewhere, there was a pain-filled scream and another and another until the voice began to get strained and still the screaming went on. There was a chilling laugh and then silence. The sounds of a harsh sobbing could be heard against a background of cold empty laughter. " I'm almossssssst done Wufei, just one more and the ritual will be complete and then the real fun will begin. Wait for me I'm coming."

At the Winner Residence
" Where have you been?"
" Chill out Heero, I've been with Anita, Geez you'd think I was on a leash or something."
" I'm sorry Duo, it's just that I've had a really weird feeling whole day and then you go off somewhere and don't come home for hours….."
" Shh Heero, it's alright I'm fine, although its nice to know you care." Heero failed to notice the grin curving Duo's lips and he heard only the words spoken and not the laughter behind it.
" Nice to know I care??, Duo, you ass, I Love You…. of course I care."
At this Duo's grin grew wider and he leaned against his lover, that same small smile gracing his face.
" I know that, I just really like it when you get all hot and bothered when you say those words ," Duo kissed him", with such feeling", another kiss", and such passion."
This last statement was punctuated with a long smoldering kiss that left Heero breathless.
Quatre chose that moment to walk into the room. For a moment he could only watch in stunned amazement as Duo slowly French-kissed Heero, a kiss that left no doubt as to what Duo was planning for later.
" Ahem……guys?"
There was no answer and, although he really didn't expect one Quatre tried again.
" Guys??, Heeellloooo Guys??, Umm ….well…. dinner is almost ready and… err…. I just…. wanted to know if you'd be joining us?"
***Dinner……Oh crap!, Anita!***
Duo broke away from the kiss with a force that left Heero gasping", Oh, gomen Heero, he turned to face Quatre", Quatre, I just remembered that I invited Anita to dinner. I have some information that I think you guys should hear about, is it alright?, for her to come to dinner I mean."
" Ye..Yes, its all right, I'll just tell Rashid to set another place on the table and Duo, next time, I suggest that you warn Heero before you invite someone into our home." Quatre then left the room to finalize dinner arrangements.
Duo turned around to find Heero glaring at him", Dinner? You invited her for dinner?"
" Yes I did. Why?, is there a problem?" Duo began to get angry, after all it was his home too and Anita was his sister, Heero would have to deal with that sooner or later and the sooner the better. Heero's shoulders slumped and he lifted his hands in a placating gesture.
" Duo, I'm sorry if you misunderstood me, I just wished you had given me more time to prepare, after all its your sister and I really want to make a good impression."
The effect of an apologizing Heero was ruined by the purely shit-eating grin he was giving Duo.
" Why you no good bastard, you were setting me up weren't you? You knew I would react this way and you wanted to make me angry."
" Well it worked didn't it?" Heero gave a small sigh", I guess I'll have to make it up to you, won't I?" Heero sighed dramatically and pretended to shudder at the thought.
" Oh yes, you'd better, in fact didn't Quatre say that dinner would be….. all…most ready?"
" Yes, but what does that have to do with anything?…….oh."
The grin Duo turned on Heero was answer enough and as Quatre came back into the room to find out when Anita would be arriving and to give another time-check for the meal, he saw Duo leading Heero up the stairs with what could only be described as a expression of animalistic glee.
***Those two never quit… I'd better tell Rashid to make sure dinner is a little late.***
Quatre grinned to himself and went off to make more arrangements.

Anita was a little apprehensive about meeting Duo's family, after all she wanted to make a good impression and she didn't want anything to interfere with that. Richard had not been pleased when she had said that she was going out and he couldn't follow her and neither had Jean-Claude for that matter. They both were too protective, she was only going to see her brother and even though she didn't tell them that, they had no right to question her whereabouts. So here she was, outside one of the largest mansions she had ever seen and in the most isolated part of the city. To say this was strange would not even come close and she was still apprehensive, not to mention she wasn't sure how she would be received, would they be as wary of her as she was of them?, would they hate her on sight?, or would they be indifferent and simply not care?
Anita really didn't like any of those options.
**Huh….well I'd better get this over with**
**You worry too much Anita, has anyone ever told you that hmmmm….everyone here is as anxious to meet you as you are to meet them, and they are all as apprehensive as you, except maybe Heero other than that……well why don't you come and see?**
** Damnit, I really need to shield my thoughts better and Duo,**

The only answer she got was a mental chuckle as she knocked on the door, it was time to face the music.
The door opened to one of the most beautiful faces she had ever seen, Blond and blue-eyed the young man was simply stunning and as Anita made her way into the foyer she was struck by the beauty of all those assembled. **Damn, are Duo's friends all gorgeous?**
***Yup and you better get used to it as we'll all be together for a long time***
Anita couldn't help the silly grin that passed over her lips at that thought.
"Hello Anita, I am Quatre, this is my partner Trowa, this is Wufei and I believe you've met Heero."
" Good night everyone, thank you for having me."
" There's no need to be so formal here Anita, we are all family and as Duo's sister you are very welcome."
" ….And if you're not then we'll all just have to go out and get you rip roaring drunk until you are."
At Duo's frank statement everyone laughed and the ice was broken. As Anita made her way into the dining room her eyes fell on the one called Wufei, there was something very familiar about him and even though she couldn't figure it out now, she would before the night was over. Before she took another step her arm was caught and a soft but strong voice said, "Thank you for making him happy, your acceptance of him is more precious than anything in this world." The speaker was Heero and Anita smiled.
" He is my brother and I find myself falling very quickly in love with him but never forget Heero, you have first place in his heart now and forever. I've only been with him for one day but he is very much in love with you never doubt that."
Heero nodded once to show his thanks before Duo's insistent voice called to them from the dining room.
"Are you guys ever coming to eat, geez… you'd think that we had all the time in the world, well I've got news for you people we don't, and I'm hungry NOW!"
Anita laughed", Heero I think that we'd better get in there before he starts to gnaw on the furniture."
" He wouldn't dare, Quatre would kill him ,that furniture is imported and very dear to him."
At Heero's deadpan statement Anita started to laugh again and they made their way into the dining room to the tune of Duo's protests as to why he shouldn't get the whole chicken.
Dinner was very pleasant and Anita enjoyed herself immensely, it had been a long time since she last had such great company. During dinner Duo had kept them all in stitches with a series of really silly jokes, but when delivered with his incurable good humor they were all laughed at. Anita was completely at ease with all five men and they in turn were very comfortable with her in their presence. They even went as far as to share embraces with their loved ones when they saw that she didn't mind. The only one who had no one to share with was Wufei, although he kept up in remarkably good spirits. This gave Anita a good opportunity to speak to him as she saw him looking out over the garden.
" Hello Wufei.."
" Hello Anita, are you having a good time?"
" Yes, everyone is wonderful and Duo seems so very happy."
" Yes, its because of Heero that he's like that, before they came together they had the worst fights and we always had to pick up the pieces afterwards."
" Duo told me, I am very glad that he had friends like you to keep him safe."
Somehow Wufei wasn't surprised that Duo had confided most of his secrets to Anita, she seemed like a very understanding person and he was grateful to all the Gods above for that.
" Has Duo said anything about us?, the rest of his family I mean."
" Only that you took care of him when Heero had to leave. Can you tell me where he went?"
" I could but I think that you should ask him, if he trusts you he will tell you, but I cannot speak of it without his permission."
" Alright, I will speak to him, in fact I need to speak to all of you before this night is over as it will be very soon."
They made their way into the living room where the others had gathered after dinner.
" Hey Anita, for a moment I thought that you and Wufei had gone off together for your own little party."
Duo couldn't help but poke fun at Wufei, after all he really looked quite cute when he turned red and started to get worked up. Tonight Duo was slightly surprised when Wufei only raised one eyebrow and quirked his lips in answer. However there was time to deal with that later he mused, as he turned to face those gathered around him and to inform them of the reason he had invited Anita to dinner.
" Today I met Anita for a chance to talk to her and to tell her of me and of my power. She was stunned but she didn't reject me and we have both grown closer. While we were talking there was a call for her to report to the scene of a crime, I went with her to see if I could help and what I saw shocked me. It was the fourth murder in a series of strange incidents involving young men of Chinese descent. " Wufei sat straight up when he heard this.
"I learned that they were all killed in various ways and each one was I little more disturbing than the last but what really shocked me was the fact that I seemed to remember hearing of this mode of killing. That's why I brought Anita here, one of us knows what I am speaking about and as Anita's brother I wish to do all that I can to help her solve what is going on."
As Duo finished talking, Wufei seemed to reach a decision and he turned to face those assembled.
" I know what Duo is talking about, I was the one who mentioned the details of this type of killing to him, in fact to all of you. It is a ritual, a ritual for calling a mate, but not any mate and not just of any race either. It is the ritual for calling the mate of the last female dragon in existence."
At this Anita sat up", A dragon?, but there are no dragons left in existence, they were all destroyed by those seeking to harness their powers for their own greed and for their fortune."
" That is true, there are no female dragons left in existence which is why this type of ritualistic killing is very strange but there is one male dragon left in existence only he has been in hiding for the last few centuries."
Quatre sat up," Wufei are you sure about this, when you say it there is no going back and I just want to make sure that you know what you are doing."
" I'm sure Quatre and I have to do this, It sickens me that someone could be carrying out this ritual without fully understanding the meaning behind it. Anita this maybe a little bit of a shock for you but there is one last male dragon and I know his whereabouts because you see,.. I am he. I am the last Dragon."
" I am Wufei Chang. The last of the Dragon Clan."
For the second time in as many days, Anita was shocked.

" But that's impossible, you feel human, you don't feel as though you have any special powers, you feel just like a normal human being."
" That's the secret, unlike the dragons that were my ancestors, there were a few of us that could assume human guise. We had no desire to take over the humankind but we were curious and as a result we were careless and my people paid for their curiosity. When they were found out they were hunted down and killed, an entire race of beings, destroyed because they could not be understood.
My wife and my first life-mate were of the first ones to be killed. In her fear and distress she lost the child she was carrying and could not assume her dragon form and so she could not get to safety. My life-mate tried to help her but he was outnumbered by those with hate in their heart and blood on their minds. I lost her and him as I lost everyone else. I am the last and I am all alone.
When the law was passed to protect mythological creatures from unlawful persecution I was angry, angry that it was too late and angry that I could do nothing to save my people.
When the call came for all creatures to reveal themselves and be accepted I refused and instead I took my human guise and pretended to be mortal. I had no wish to reveal myself and I have done so only once before, the second time is with you."
Exhausted both emotionally and physically, Wufei could only sit down on the seat provided by Quatre who quickly enfolded him in his arms and brushed a soft kiss of understanding across his brow. It had been too much for Wufei and he gratefully turned into the embrace offered to him as he sobbed silently. Anita could only sit in stunned amazement as Heero and Duo made their way over to the chair to offer what comfort that they could.
In a dim part of her memory Anita took stock of the fact that they seemed to give comfort as the Lycanthropes did, through the reassurance of touch and bodily contact. She was horrified by what had just been revealed to her and her heart went out to Wufei, this was the same type of thing that she was fighting against, wrongful persecution of other races.
Her fight to protect zombies was only a small part of what the greater fight being fought was about and Anita was enraged at what had happened to the young man before her. She was shaken out of her thoughts by the quiet voice of Trowa.
" Wufei has seen it fit to reveal who and what he really is to you and that means that he has accepted you and as his friends we must do the same. My name is Trowa but for a long time I had no name, I was just another guardian of the mortals in my charge. I am an angel and there is not much to be said about me other than the fact my charge was no other than the young man sitting before you, Quatre R. Winner, who was the latest in a long line of charges that were entrusted to my care and from the moment I saw him I knew my life could never be the same. He was different and I quickly picked up on that and as I watched him from afar I fell in love and wanted no more than to be with him forever.
I decided to fall to earth knowing fully that I would lose my divinity and become mortal but I had to try, and so one night of the full moon I fell. I timed my fall to the place I knew my beloved would be and hoped that he would understand what I had done for him. I crashed down to the garden and frightened him badly, I was covered in blood and I thought that he would run and leave me but he didn't, instead he said he knew that I would come and he would be the one to save me. He took me in his arm and carried me home, I have been with him ever since."
An angel, things were getting doubly interesting and Anita did not know if she could keep up with all the revelations being made but she knew that she would never have another chance and decided to hold her peace and listen for the while. As Trowa spoke Quatre listened and decided to add his small part to the puzzle being unfolded out before them.
"My name is Quatre R.Winner I have no other ties to fame other than the fact that I can heal people through the power of my touch. I can heal those of emotional hurts and those of physical hurts. I keep this power to myself because I can never truly heal those who wish to do harm unto others for their own ends. I knew Trowa would come to me because I felt his presence at the moment of my birth and I knew that one day we would be together. He did not say this, but he was granted special status to remain my guardian when it was seen that we were meant to be together. He has all the powers that he once had and is my protector and I love him with all my heart and soul."
Quatre smiled over to Trowa who watched him with a smile also present on his face, their love could be felt in the air and Anita trembled in reaction to the feelings around her. All eyes then switched to Heero, it was time for his story.
" My name is Heero Yuy and I am also the last of my clan, like Wufei, my race was killed by those who preferred to act rather than to take the time to understand those of different backgrounds. I am a Trueborn, we were the original ancestors of the present day lycanthropes. We were faster, more powerful, we possessed longevity and could harness the power of nature. My race was discovered by those who wanted quick ways to garner power, and the reactions to their controlling nature was not pleasant. There was a bloodbath but our numbers were small and we were quickly destroyed, I alone remained of the Trueborns. There were however children who managed to escape and they mated with those of other clans and became the forefathers of the present day lycanthropes. Of those who had the powers I mentioned I am the last and so effectively the last Trueborn."
" To end our tale I found Wufei and became his friend, we were alike in our situations, we both passed as full blood humans and no-one was the wiser. We have no illusions to rule, we just want to be left in peace. We never became lovers and we spent our lives with each other for the last 4 centuries. Wufei is the elder by 2 centuries. In our wanderings we chanced upon the unique couple of an angel and a mortal, Trowa and Quatre, Wufei and I were quickly accepted and as the time went on he became their lover and I found Duo soon after that. I leave sometimes to pay my respects to those I have lost, that is something that Duo taught me." Heero looked over to Duo who gave him a smile and a wink and continued."We have all lived as one family with Quatre providing us with a home and that is all there is. You know the rest from what Duo has told you and so what do you think?"
" I am honored that you, all of you would share your tales with me. I wish only to be counted among your friends and I am sincerely sorry for all that you have endured at the hands of those who did not understand you."
" You already are Anita, from the moment you accepted Duo you became a member of our family and as such you are entitled to our protection should you ever need it." This soft statement was made by Quatre, who held the now calmed Wufei in his arms. They all nodded once in acceptance of what Quatre said and Duo grinned happily at those around him, his circle was complete and there was nothing that could ever take away what he held in his arms now.
12.30am The Winner Living Room.
***Everyone here is so very strange and exotic, who would ever have thought that in this day there would still be an authentic dragon? Not to mention that the lycanthropes of today are not the first born they believe they are, but a mixture of many other clans? And the most to say the least is the revelation that there is a real live angel here in this very room.***
Anita was in a very mild state of shock and the fact that she didn't drink meant that all her thinking processes were at full capacity and she was lucid, so that everything heard was being processed and stored for future reference. It certainly was turning out to be an interesting night.
" You said that there have been 4 murders, I do know that there are 5 stages to the ritual so one person remains to be killed. It was a very old ritual and whomever is perpetuating these murders certainly must have an idea of the history of the ancient dragons."
" But Wufei why on earth would this person do this now?"
" Duo, this year is a leap year and as a result all the planets are in perfect alignment for the mating ritual and the conceiving of offspring."
" But no-one knows of your existence, as far as anyone is concerned there are no more dragons."
" Obviously someone is hoping that this ritual will bring out one, but Wufei why haven't you been affected?"
" Well Heero I've been living as a human for quite a number of years and maybe that's why it hasn't affected me as yet."
" Wufei, if the final murder is carried out what will happen to you?"
" Quatre I really don't know, I never had to go through this type of ritual before, my mates were chosen by my parents and so I have never had to experience this before. The ritual is used for those who cannot for some reason chose a proper mate, the ritual causes any available male to go on heat and they will therefore be ready for mating. However if the dragon chosen does not want to be mated he will fight the call and it usually leads to a large amount of deaths as the other dragons try to get that particular dragon under control."
" Will this happen to you, do you have any idea if you can be affected after all we have been your mates for a long while now."
" Trowa you and Quatre are mated and although I may make love to you on occasion, I am not mated in the commitment that normal mating entails. Dragons like many creatures mate for life and only through death are we released from that which bonds us. I should have died with my mates but after her death he begged me to live, he didn't want my life to end like theirs' did. Draakel felt that I was meant for something else and for that reason alone I stayed alive."
" Wufei I am glad that you chose life, we are honored that you chose to share yourself with us and we will do everything possible to protect you and keep you from what or whomever is doing this."
" Thank you Quatre I don't know what I would do without friends like you."
During the talk that they had been having, Duo was thinking of a suitable guardian for Wufei, it had to be someone whom they could trust and he had to be able to withstand Wufei's fury. Duo knew of just the person but he couldn't say for sure he had to ask everyone first.
" Guys, I know that Wufei is quite capable of taking care of himself but in case one of us can't be with him at some time can we have someone here to watch him for us?"
" Duo that really isn't necessary I am fine, and noth…"
" We don't know that as yet, you haven't been affected with us present but what if something happens while we are away and you go on a rampage? What then?, I'd really feel better if I knew that you were doubly protected."
At this a peculiar light went off in Duo's eyes, a light that was not missed by Heero, Quatre, Trowa or Anita only Wufei seemed oblivious.

Quatre didn't know what Duo was planning, but it seemed as good as any plan to keep Wufei safe. He would do anything for Wufei, he did love him maybe not in the same way as he loved Trowa but Wufei was not someone whom Quatre would leave in the cold. He would use all of the resources he had to keep Wufei safe.

**Gasp**,okay, okay I'm really sorry that Wufei had to go through so much hell. I'm going to be a lot more nicer now. I bet you didn't expect that little thing between Trowa and Quatre. If anything Quatre would be the angel but that's a whole different story altogether.
I hope you enjoyed this part things are getting hotter from here on in. In case anyone is wondering I did say that only the names and physical descriptions would remain the same but my muse said differently. After all Wufei being the last of the dragon clan is a great plot device and Heero being oh so 'perfect-soldierish' is perfect for Trueborn defiance.
Trowa's intensity is perfect for guardians who are not supposed to get involved with their charges. Quatre's personality is perfect for a healer and well Duo is just Duo.
